The team was approached by Maureen at What's Your Point?, a youth inclusion group in Redditch, about helping the young people to redecorate a subway in the town centre. After meetings, site visits to check out the walls of the subways and risk assessments we were able to create a week long programme which included meeting the young people, coming up with a theme, designing, painting and protecting the mural with an anti-graffiti coating. The theme the young people came up with was tattoos, because of the history of tattoo needle making in Redditch, and the vibrant tattoo designs that look so good when painted in huge designs. The painting areas were made safe so the public using the subway could watch our progress, and we got cracking! Outlines first, then filling in the pictures of dragons, flowers, fish and birds followed. It took 4 days to paint, with the help of over 50 young people, with ages ranging from 11 to 20 and varying artistic skills. The photos of the finished walls speak for themselves! The project was finished on time, on budget and without a hitch. Everyone enjoyed themselves and worked together to create a amazing piece of urban art. The murals were officially opened by Jackie Smith, MP for Redditch and now Home Secretery, and went down a storm.
